Funding, grants and society-listed host centres

Understand what an opportunity listing actually establishes before you apply.

Distinguish a host from an open post

Some profiles describe host centres in society training or grant schemes. That establishes the centre’s presence in the cited directory, not an independently advertised vacancy, funded position or confirmed intake. We retain those source notes on the profile.

Read the scheme rules

The ESC publishes multiple grants and fellowship schemes. Check the exact scheme, host requirements, eligibility, application window and award terms. A common scheme deadline does not mean every listed host is recruiting separately.

Reconcile the costs

Record who pays you, how much, in which currency and for what period. Ask whether the award covers salary, fees, insurance, travel and living costs, and whether any extra funding is needed.

Confirm with the host

Before relying on a host listing, confirm supervision, available training, proposed dates and whether an institutional offer is required alongside the society application.

Look for institutional funding rules

Some institutions state whether they pay a salary or stipend, and some expect you to secure external funding. Where a source is silent, treat funding as unknown rather than assuming it is included.

Plan for timing

Society schemes and institutional recruitment can run on different calendars. A grant decision may arrive after a host’s own deadline, so ask both parties how the timing is coordinated.

Ask what is included

When a host or scheme mentions support, ask exactly what it covers: salary or stipend, tuition or fees, health insurance, travel, housing and conference costs. Different schemes pay for different things, and the total you receive may be lower than a headline amount.
