Cardiology fellowship in Canada: matching and licensing
What to separate and verify when you plan a cardiology subspecialty fellowship in Canada: the training application, the national match where one is used, and provincial licensing.
Two routes appear in this directory
Canadian profiles come from two kinds of source. Some are university postgraduate medical education fellowships that publish their own eligibility, funding and application steps. Others are programmes listed by a national society, such as the Canadian Society of Echocardiography, which lists echocardiography training programmes but does not itself describe how to apply to each one. Read the source behind each profile to see which applies.
National matching
CaRMS describes itself as a national, independent, not-for-profit organisation that provides an application and matching service for medical training across Canada. Its services include a Fall Subspecialty Residency Match and a Spring Subspecialty Residency Match. Whether a particular fellowship recruits through a match or by direct application is stated by the programme, so confirm it before you build a timeline.
Provincial licensing is separate
Licensing in Canada is handled by provincial regulators. For example, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario states that all doctors must be members of the CPSO to practise in Ontario and that applications go directly to the CPSO through its portal. A training offer does not replace registration, so ask the programme which licence or training registration you need and how long it takes.
University requirements can be strict
Some university fellowship offices set their own requirements for funding and eligibility, such as a minimum scholarship level or limits on self-funding. Where this directory records such a rule it is labelled as an institution-wide policy rather than a feature of one programme. Read it before you contact a department.
What to confirm in writing
Confirm the start year, the application portal and deadline, whether international graduates are accepted, the funding source, the supervising registration category and who supports licensing and immigration paperwork.
